VR Murder Mystery Game

A Virtual Reality Murder Mystery Game Design

TEAM: Ruyan Chen

MY JOB: Game Designer, Unreal Developer

TOOLS: Unreal Engine, MetaHuman, Photoshop

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A Project Overview (3 mins)

CONCEPT & INSPIRATION

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to many previously accessible in-person recreational activities. Virtual Reality (VR), with its ability to create hyper-realistic environments, offers immersive experiences that closely resemble reality. It’s worth exploring how VR may open new avenues in traditionally in-person activities.

OBJECTIVES

  • To create a VR version of the traditionally in-person party game–Murder Mystery.

PROCESS & METHODOLOGY

Story

A key aspect of this game design is crafting the murder mystery narrative. The document below provides both the shared background information for all players and individual details—such as each player’s relationship to the victim and their actions on the day of the murder.

Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine is used to built a realistic 3D cruise ship suite with the murder scene. I looked at the images of luxurious rooms of real cruise ships and searched for appropriate textures, materials, and 3D object using websites such as Pinterest, Adobe Stock, and Sketchfab to facilitate the construction of the game environment demonstrated below.

MetaHuman

MetaHuman is used to create the characters.

Product Requirement Document

The product requirement document of this VR murder mystery game outlines key term definitions, project context and scope, the storyline and objectives, core features and main functionalities, as well as hardware integration.

REFLECTIONS

This represents the first stage in the development of the VR murder mystery game. Upcoming development efforts will concentrate on creating interactive experiences and immersive game environments with Unreal Engine, guided by the product requirement document.
